App Description
This project developed and tested a new rehabilitation exercise customization feature in Orthocare’s LimbStrong mobile application that uses data from their low-cost surface electromyography (sEMG) sensor system to enable at-home therapy exercises in individuals with severe muscle weakness in the upper limb. Orthocare’s LimbStrong system uses exergaming (technology driven physical activity) with a biofeedback-based interactive therapeutic gaming platform to motivate patients during therapy. In prior pilot work, they developed a cross-platform mobile app with a side-scrolling Bird Game that demonstrated successful integration with thir sEMG hardware. However, the existing Bird Game is not appropriate for all patients or settings and some patients may require more instructional interactions during use. Orthocare developed customizable LimbStrong Exercises that allow therapists to set muscle activation targets for each patient, guides patients through therapist-specified exercise regimens, and provides encouragement as the patient completes the exercises. User involvement and testing occured throughout their app development.
